Capacity Expansion

In 2024, Borealis increased its circular production capacity by 18%, reaching 227,900 metric tons. The volume of circular feedstock processed nearly doubled to 221,200 metric tons. This growth was supported by strategic investments and acquisitions, including the acquisition of Integra Plastics AD in Bulgaria, which added over 20,000 metric tons of advanced mechanical recycling capacity.

Technological Advancements

Borealis announced the construction of a new semi-commercial compounding line in Beringen, Belgium, to enhance recyclate processing capabilities. Additionally, a EUR 4.5 million investment was made to upgrade a steam cracker in Porvoo, Finland, enabling increased use of circular and renewable feedstocks.

Strategic Partnerships

Borealis signed a long-term supply agreement with TOMRA to ensure a consistent supply of sustainable raw materials for recycling operations. A new partnership with Infinium was formed to convert captured carbon emissions into feedstocks for low carbon footprint plastics production.

Product and Application Developments

In 2024, Borealis launched new Bornewables™, Borcycle™ C, and Borcycle™ M grades, expanding its circular product portfolio. FDA clearance was secured for selected Borcycle™ M grades for use in food and cosmetics packaging. In the automotive sector, a Borcycle M-based glass-fiber reinforced PP grade with 65% PCR was introduced. Collaborations with Neste and Covestro advanced tire recycling for automotive applications. In infrastructure, chemically recycled drinking water pipes were installed in Austria, and a new Borcycle M-based jacketing solution for cables was introduced in the energy sector.
