- Blue Circle Olefins is developing a 200 kton Methanol to Olefins facility in Rotterdam.
- The plant will convert green methanol into ethylene and propylene by 2030.
- The project aims to reduce GHG emissions by over 80% compared to oil-based polyolefins.
Agreement Overview
Blue Circle Olefins and Chane have signed a co-siting agreement for a 200 kton olefins production facility at Chane’s Terminal Nieuwe Maas in the Port of Rotterdam. This partnership provides Blue Circle Olefins with a strategic location to develop its circular Methanol to Olefins (MTO) production facility, utilizing Chane’s logistics and storage services for renewable methanol feedstocks.
Project Details
The facility will convert green methanol, sourced from mixed plastic waste or agricultural and forestry residues, into carbon recycled and biobased ethylene and propylene by 2030. This initiative aims to supply the European chemical industry with fossil-free feedstocks for circular plastics production, reducing full life cycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80% compared to traditional oil-based polyolefins.
Strategic Importance
The agreement highlights the synergies available at Chane’s site, offering optimal conditions for the project due to its proximity to clients in the Port area. The collaboration underscores the strength of the Rotterdam port industrial cluster, where companies can benefit from close collaboration and integration.
