EnviTec Biogas advances construction of Vara biomethane and bio‑LNG plant
- Factory Acceptance Test for the EnviThan gas upgrading passed and the unit has been assembled on site; cold commissioning is planned for autumn.
- First biomethane production is scheduled for January 2027, with up to 70 GWh/year of biomethane for downstream bio‑LNG in regular operation.
- The industrial facility is designed for about 370,000 tonnes of input per year, processing pig and cattle slurry and manure sourced from a ~100‑farmer cooperative (BVS).
- Civil and mechanical progress: feeding technology installed, concrete tanks completed by EnviTec‑Greten, first air‑supported roofs fitted, heat exchanger integrated; piping and electrical works underway.
Construction progress
One year after ground‑breaking, EnviTec supplies and installs the entire biogas and EnviThan upgrading technology for the combined plant in Vara. The EnviThan unit passed the Factory Acceptance Test and has been assembled on site. Feeding technology is installed, concrete tanks built by EnviTec‑Greten have been fitted internally, first air‑supported roofs are in place, and the heat exchanger unit has been integrated. Piping and electrical works are underway while mechanical installation continues.
Start‑up and feedstock
For biological start‑up the tanks will be filled with substrate sourced from surrounding biogas plants. Tanker trucks unload in a dedicated technical building; liquid substrate is pumped to the intake tank and to the fermenters, then solid substrate is added and mixed using the feeding system to ensure even supply and stable biogas production. BVS is a cooperative of around 100 farmers supplying pig and cattle slurry and manure.
Upgrading, output and efficiency
Produced biogas will be upgraded with the EnviThan membrane process and adjusted to the liquefaction plant’s gas quality before direct transfer to the customer’s bio‑LNG unit. In regular operation the plant is expected to deliver up to 70 GWh of biomethane per year. Energy‑efficiency measures include heat recovery using digestate heat to preheat incoming liquid substrate.
Design and schedule
Equipment enclosures and fermenter installations are designed for Swedish snow and wind loads and construction phases are inspected by a publicly appointed expert. Cold commissioning is planned for autumn, and stepwise coordination of biogas, upgrading and liquefaction commissioning targets the first biomethane production in January 2027.
