EnviTec Biogas advances Vara, Sweden biomethane plant construction
- EnviThan gas-upgrading unit passed the Factory Acceptance Test and has been assembled on site.
- Cold commissioning of the combined biogas and upgrading plant is planned for autumn.
- First biomethane production is scheduled for January 2027.
- The plant is designed for about 370,000 tonnes of input per year and up to 70 GWh biomethane annually.
Construction progress
One year after the first ground-breaking, EnviTec has delivered and installed core equipment at the Vara site: feeding technology, concrete tanks built by EnviTec-Greten, interior tank fit-out, the heat exchanger unit, and the assembled EnviThan upgrading plant after a successful FAT. Piping, electrical and further mechanical installations are in progress and the first air-supported roofs are installed.
Feedstock and biological start-up
The industrial-scale plant, owned by a cooperative of about 100 farmers (Biogas Västra Skaraborg AB), will process regional pig and cattle slurry and manure. Tanks will be filled with substrate sourced from surrounding biogas plants; unloading will occur in a dedicated building and solid and liquid substrates will be mixed to ensure even supply and stable biogas production. EnviTec will provide biological supervision and a defined start-up and ramp-up plan.
Upgrading and output
Biogas will be upgraded on site using the EnviThan membrane process, with gas quality adjusted for the downstream liquefaction plant. The biomethane will feed a customer-provided bio-LNG plant. In regular operation the facility is expected to deliver up to 70 GWh of biomethane per year.
Design, standards and schedule
The site design accounts for Swedish snow and wind loads and a publicly appointed expert inspects construction phases. Cold commissioning is planned for autumn, with first biomethane production targeted for January 2027.
