EnviTec Biogas Launches Swedish Bio-LNG Project

Key highlights
  • The plant will produce up to 70 GWh of biomethane per year.
  • It will process 370,000 tons of feedstock annually.
  • The facility includes five digesters with a total capacity of 32,000 m³.
  • Biomethane is upgraded to 98% CH₄ using EnviThan technology.

Project Overview

Biogas Västra Skaraborg AB has initiated the construction of a biogas and gas upgrading plant in Vara, Sweden. The facility aims to produce up to 70 GWh of biomethane annually, marking a significant development in the Swedish market.

Feedstock and Processing

The plant will utilize pig and cattle manure along with other agricultural residues, processing approximately 370,000 tons of feedstock each year. It features five digesters with a combined capacity of nearly 32,000 m³ to ensure optimal retention times for different feedstocks.

Technical Specifications

Hygienization is required when mixing manure from various farms. After two fermentation stages, the material is isolated for ten hours in a tank heated to over 52 °C. Heat exchangers and industrial heat pumps enhance energy efficiency, improving the biomethane's CI score.

Partnerships and Technology

The EnviThan gas upgrading plant, in collaboration with Nordsol, will produce biomethane upgraded to 98% CH₄. Nordsol's Flash-2-Sweep technology enhances membrane performance, enabling liquefaction-ready biomethane without molecular sieves or chemicals.

Market and Support

The project receives backing from Klimatklivet, a Swedish climate investment scheme aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Swedish biomethane market is decentralized, with biomethane primarily transported as compressed gas, while liquefied gas distribution is growing.
