- BioNorrois will inject 153 GWh of biomethane annually into the gas network.
- Cristal Union supplies up to 80% of the 185,000 tons of organic materials used.
- 150,000 tons of digestate will replace 5,500 tons of chemical fertilizers annually.
- The project involved over 130 farmers and local stakeholders.
Project Overview
TotalEnergies has commissioned BioNorrois, its eighth biomethane production unit in France, located in Fontaine-le-Dun, Normandy. The facility will inject 153 GWh of biomethane annually into the natural gas transport network, equivalent to the average gas consumption of over 30,000 people.
Partnership and Materials
The project is in partnership with the French sugar group Cristal Union, which holds a 10% stake. Cristal Union will supply beet pulp and other residues from its nearby production site, accounting for up to 80% of the 185,000 tons of organic materials used in the biomethane plant.
Environmental Impact
The unit will produce 150,000 tons of digestate annually, which will be utilized by Cristal Union and the Norman cooperative NatUp with partner farms. This will support the transition to sustainable, locally produced fertilizers, saving more than 5,500 tons of chemical fertilizers each year and preventing the emission of 30,000 tons of CO2.
Local Collaboration
The development of BioNorrois involved consultation with over 130 farmers, agri-food industries, and local administrations. This collaboration ensured the project met the needs of the local community and stakeholders.
