Arkema Advances Decarbonization at Lacq/Mourenx Site

Key highlights
  • Arkema's TREFLe Project at Lacq/Mourenx reduces SO2 emissions by 40% and GHG by over 10%.
  • The project includes a new treatment plant for sulfur-based effluents.
  • The initiative represents a €40 million investment, partly funded by the France 2030 plan.

Project Overview

Arkema has completed a modernization and decarbonization project at its Lacq/Mourenx site, focusing on specialty sulfur derivatives used in agrochemicals, refining, petrochemicals, and renewable fuels. The TREFLe Project is a strategic initiative aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing sustainability.

Emission Reductions

The project follows a 2022 investment that achieved a 28% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The new treatment plant for sulfur-based effluents will further cut SO2 emissions by 40% and GHG emissions by over 10%.

Circular Economy

The new process will produce sulfuric acid, which can be used as a raw material by other industrial sites, aligning with Arkema's circular economy approach. Additionally, the project will help reduce the site's water consumption.

Investment and Funding

The initiative represents a €40 million investment, with partial funding from the French State under the France 2030 plan, operated by ADEME (French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management).
