Investment and Location
Air Liquide has inaugurated a new Steam Methane Reformer (SMR) unit at the Chempark Dormagen site near Cologne, Germany. The company invested approximately 100 million euros in this advanced production facility.
Production Capacity
The SMR unit boasts an annual production capacity of 22,000 tonnes of hydrogen and 120,000 tonnes of carbon monoxide. These gases are essential for various industrial applications, including the production of flexible polyurethane foams.
Supply Agreement
Under a long-term agreement signed in 2012, the unit will supply Bayer MaterialScience’s new large-scale TDI (toluene diisocyanate) plant. This plant is a significant investment for Bayer MaterialScience, aimed at making the site their European center for TDI production.
Technological Advancements
Designed and built by Air Liquide Engineering & Construction teams, the unit incorporates leading technologies to ensure high standards of efficiency, flexibility, and safety. It also increases production capacities to meet growing demand.
Pipeline Connectivity
Connected to Air Liquide’s 600 km Rhine-Ruhr pipeline, the new unit will also enable the company to supply hydrogen to other customers in the region, enhancing the reliability and reach of their supply network.
