Expansion Overview
Chevron Phillips Chemical is expanding its Tessenderlo, Belgium facility, operated by its affiliate Chevron Phillips Chemicals International N.V. The expansion includes the addition of an on-purpose hydrogen sulfide (H2S) unit and increased capacity for sulfur-based products. This project aims to better serve the growing demands of customers worldwide, particularly in Europe and Asia. Construction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2014.
Increased Production Capacity
The expansion will boost production capacity at the Tessenderlo site by more than 40%. This increase is in response to the rising demand for synthetic rubbers and plastics, as well as organosulfur products like tertiary dodecyl mercaptan (TDM), which are used as chain transfer agents.
Product Range
The Tessenderlo facility produces a variety of chemical intermediates, including mercaptans, sulfides, polysulfides, and Scentinel® gas odorants. These products are utilized in agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, rubber and plastics modifiers, and the odorization of propane and natural gas. Chevron Phillips Chemical also produces similar products at its Borger, Texas facility.
Additional Facilities
Chevron Phillips Chemicals International N.V. operates three production facilities in Belgium. In addition to the specialty chemicals plant in Tessenderlo, there is an engineering polymers compounding unit in Kallo-Beveren and a polyalphaolefins plant in Beringen.
