Stegra Boden AB

About Stegra Boden

Stegra Boden AB, formerly known as H2 Green Steel Boden AB, is a Swedish company developing a large-scale green steel production facility in Boden, northern Sweden.

The plant, spanning 270 hectares, integrates green hydrogen production via a 700 MW electrolyzer powered by renewable electricity, direct reduced iron (DRI) using hydrogen to replace fossil fuels, and electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. Construction is underway, with key milestones including installation of electrolyzer modules and erection of the DRI tower. Planned capacity is 5 million tonnes of green steel annually by 2030, achieving up to 95% lower CO₂ emissions compared to traditional blast furnace methods.

Founded in 2020 as part of efforts to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries, Stegra Boden AB has secured significant financing, including €1.4 billion in recent commitments, and off-take agreements with customers such as thyssenkrupp Materials Services, Microsoft, and automakers like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz. Production startup is targeted for 2026-2027.
