Société Gabonaise de Raffinage (SOGARA) is Gabon's sole oil refinery, located in Port-Gentil. Established in 1967 as a hydroskimming facility, it processes primarily Rabi Light crude oil at a capacity of approximately 24,000 barrels per day (1.2 million tonnes annually), though it often operates below full potential due to maintenance issues.
The refinery produces key petroleum products for the domestic market, including unleaded gasoline, butane, Jet A1 kerosene, and diesel (500 ppm sulfur). Majority-owned by the Gabonese state since 2017, SOGARA supplies a significant portion of the country's fuel needs but relies on imports to meet full demand.
Ongoing projects include debottlenecking existing units with new kerosene sweetening and storage facilities, alongside plans for a modular hydrocracker expansion to boost capacity, produce cleaner Africa 5-standard fuels, and enhance self-sufficiency by 2030.
