Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. (KPO) is the operating company for the Karachaganak oil and gas condensate field in West Kazakhstan. The field, discovered in 1979, is one of the world’s largest gas condensate reservoirs. KPO operates under a long-term production sharing agreement with the Republic of Kazakhstan.
KPO manages field development, production, and processing of natural gas and condensate. Operations include gas treatment, condensate stabilization, and sulfur recovery, with significant volumes of gas re-injected to maintain reservoir pressure and enhance liquids recovery. Sales gas is supplied under long-term arrangements, including processing via the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant, while stabilized condensate is exported, notably through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) system.
KPO is a Netherlands-incorporated joint venture acting on behalf of the Karachaganak consortium. Project partners include Eni and Shell (each holding a leading interest), Chevron, LUKOIL, and KazMunayGas. The company’s activities provide upstream feedstocks and processed hydrocarbons relevant to regional refining and petrochemical value chains.
