International Union for Conservation of Nature

About IUCN

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a global membership union of government agencies and civil society organizations dedicated to nature conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Gland, Switzerland, it convenes expert commissions and partners worldwide to advance conservation science, policy, and practice. IUCN is known for global standards and knowledge products such as the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the IUCN Protected Area categories.

For industrial sectors, including chemicals, IUCN develops tools and guidance to assess and manage biodiversity risks and opportunities, inform restoration, and measure outcomes (e.g., the Species Threat Abatement and Restoration metric and nature-based solutions frameworks). It supports area-based planning, impact mitigation hierarchies, and alignment with international biodiversity goals such as the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Through partnerships with companies, NGOs, and governments, IUCN helps integrate biodiversity considerations into site operations, supply chains, and corporate strategies.
