About HyNet

HyNet is a UK industrial decarbonisation initiative focused on deploying low‑carbon hydrogen production and carbon capture, transport and storage (CCUS) infrastructure across North West England and North Wales. Operating as a consortium of energy and industrial partners, HyNet plans to produce hydrogen (primarily from natural gas with CO2 capture) and build dedicated pipelines to supply industrial sites, power generation, and transport, while capturing CO2 from emitters and transporting it for permanent storage in depleted offshore gas fields in Liverpool Bay.

The project targets significant reductions in regional industrial emissions by enabling fuel switching to hydrogen and capturing CO2 from hard‑to‑abate sectors such as chemicals, refining, glass, and cement. HyNet is part of the UK government’s CCUS cluster program and is progressing multiple linked projects, including hydrogen production, distribution networks, and CO2 gathering and storage systems, to support the transition of energy‑intensive industries to lower‑carbon operations.
