Established in 1956 under Law No. 135 as the General Petroleum Authority and renamed EGPC in 1962, it operates as a state-owned holding entity affiliated with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, headquartered in Cairo.
EGPC oversees the full petroleum value chain, including upstream exploration and production, downstream refining and processing, transportation, storage, and trade.
