African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) is a pan-African multilateral financial institution established in 1993 to finance and promote intra- and extra-African trade. Headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, the bank operates through a network of regional offices across the continent. Its shareholding is a hybrid public–private structure, encompassing African governments and central banks, regional and international financial institutions, and private investors.
Afreximbank provides trade and project finance, guarantees and risk‑mitigation instruments, syndicated facilities, supply‑chain and receivables financing, and trade services and advisory support. The institution focuses on advancing industrialization and value addition in Africa by enabling capital investment, export development, and reliable trade flows across manufacturing, commodities, and infrastructure. Its financing frequently supports sectors relevant to the chemical value chain, including petrochemicals, fertilizers, specialty and basic chemicals, and related logistics and energy projects. Afreximbank also runs initiatives aimed at deepening intra-African trade and improving trade facilitation, contributing to more resilient regional supply chains.
