At a glance
  • The ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier will be delivered in November 2026.
  • The vessel aims to reduce GHG emissions in marine transportation.
  • NYK targets net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
  • The vessel has a capacity of 40,000m³ and will fly the Japanese flag.

Agreement Overview

Yara Clean Ammonia and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have signed a time-charter contract for an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC), set for delivery in November 2026. This marks the first time-charter agreement for such a vessel, which is designed to reduce CO2 emissions in maritime transport.

Environmental Impact

The AFMGC will play a crucial role in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions from marine transportation. This initiative aligns with NYK's goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. The vessel will support the growing demand for ammonia in the power sector and as a marine fuel.

Technical Specifications

The vessel will have a capacity of 40,000m³ and will be flagged in Japan. It measures 180 meters in length, 32 meters in breadth, and 18.45 meters in molded depth. The AFMGC is the most popular type of vessel for international ammonia transportation.

Collaboration and Future Plans

Since 2021, Yara Clean Ammonia and NYK have collaborated on the practical application of ammonia-fueled vessels. This partnership aims to ensure carbon-intensity compliance throughout the ammonia supply chain. Both companies are committed to further developing the ammonia supply chain, not only in maritime transportation but also in other sectors.
