Introduction

WACKER has launched FGF-2 Food, a bioengineered growth factor designed for cultivated meat production. This product is free from animal-derived components and adheres to Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards.

Product Details

FGF-2 Food is a highly purified growth factor produced through microbial fermentation. It plays a crucial role in cell culture by promoting the proliferation of muscle and connective tissue cells while preventing premature differentiation. This allows for the use of cell culture media without animal-derived components like fetal calf serum.

Market Impact

Cultivated meat offers a sustainable and resource-efficient alternative to traditional meat production. The market is expanding rapidly, with over 170 companies globally working on solutions. FGF-2 Food is pivotal for reducing costs and scaling this technology, as it provides food-grade quality ingredients in commercially viable quantities, a first in the industry.

Regulatory Status

Cultivated meat has received approval in the USA, Singapore, and the UK, with ongoing approval processes in Europe and Asia. WACKER has partnered with Aleph Farms since 2021 to improve production processes and supply chain solutions.

Rollout Plan

The initial rollout of WACKER's FGF-2 Food will target the U.S. market, with plans to expand to Asia and Europe in the following year. The first batches are already available, with deliveries set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.
