Overview

Veolia is spearheading a European epidemiological surveillance program using wastewater as a health indicator. The initiative aims to detect emerging health threats early and enhance public health responses across urban areas in Europe.

Program Details

Over three years, up to 500 wastewater samples will be collected from European cities and analyzed in Veolia's Spanish laboratories. Each sample will undergo more than 500 tests to identify pollutants, viruses, bacteria, and drug residues.

Strategic Alignment

This initiative is part of the EU4Health program and aligns with the revised European directive on wastewater treatment. It supports the European “One Health” strategy, which focuses on analyzing collective behavior, assessing public policy impacts, and identifying new health threats.

Partnerships

The project is conducted in partnership with the CSIC, Cetaqua, and the University of Santiago de Compostela. It builds on over a decade of wastewater monitoring experience in Spanish cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville.
