BASF Expands Ultrason® P Portfolio for EU Food-Contact Compliance

Key highlights
  • EU Regulation 2024/3190 bans bisphenols in food-contact materials from January 2025.
  • BASF offers six PPSU grades for compliance with the new EU regulation.
  • Transition periods for market placement extend until January 2028.
  • Existing PESU injection molding tools remain usable with new PPSU grades.

EU Regulation Impact

The EU Regulation 2024/3190, effective January 2025, prohibits the use of hazardous bisphenols in food-contact materials. Transition periods for compliance extend until January 2028, depending on the article category.

BASF's Response

BASF has introduced a portfolio of six polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) grades that comply with the new regulation. These grades are free from Bisphenol S (BPS) and Bisphenol A (BPA), offering a compliant alternative for high-temperature food-contact applications.

Material Transition

Manufacturers using polyethersulfone (PESU), polysulfone (PSU), or polyetherimide (PEI) in food-contact applications can switch to the new PPSU grades. BASF provides data sheets, material certificates, and food contact approvals to facilitate this transition.

Technical Advantages

The new PPSU grades offer benefits such as easy mold release, versatile color options, and high performance, including temperature-independent mechanical properties and resistance to detergents, oils, fats, and superheated steam. Existing PESU injection molding tools can still be used with these new grades.
