thyssenkrupp Uhde wins POSCO E&C contract for low‑emission coke oven battery

Key highlights
  • POSCO E&C contracted thyssenkrupp Uhde to replace 1980s Battery #3A at Pohang with a new top‑charge coke oven battery.
  • The project includes EnviBAT single‑chamber pressure control, an emission‑free tar separation plant and a MonoClaus sulfur recovery unit.
  • Scope covers technology provision, engineering, equipment procurement, site supervision and commissioning support as part of POSCO's coke plant modernization.

Contract award

thyssenkrupp Uhde was awarded a contract by POSCO E&C to design and supply a low‑emission, top‑charge coke oven battery to replace Battery #3A at the POSCO Pohang Steelworks.

Scope

The order covers a pad‑up rebuild including technology provision, engineering, equipment procurement, site supervision and commissioning support as part of POSCO’s coke plant modernization program.

Emissions control equipment

The project includes revamping the tar separation unit and construction of a MonoClaus plant to replace outdated two‑stage Claus units, aiming to improve sulfur recovery and gas treatment performance.

EnviBAT pressure regulation

The design incorporates EnviBAT single‑chamber pressure regulation to minimize emissions by continuous pressure monitoring and adjustment through the coking cycle, preventing early pressure peaks that cause releases via oven doors and the battery roof; additional measures include flexible spring‑loaded door systems and water‑filled rising pipe covers; EnviBAT is operating in over 30 batteries and more than 2,100 ovens globally.
