thyssenkrupp Rasselstein agrees 20-year PPA for 8 MW on-site PV with VSB (TotalEnergies)

Project scope
thyssenkrupp Rasselstein is installing a ground-mounted photovoltaic system on two undeveloped areas of its Andernach plant in partnership with VSB Integrated Energy Solutions. VSB (part of the VSB Group, which became part of TotalEnergies in 2025) will finance, build and operate the plant while thyssenkrupp Rasselstein will purchase 100% of the electricity under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement.
Technical details and schedule
The PV installation will cover 5.2 hectares with about 12,000 solar modules and a peak capacity of 8 megawatts, targeting roughly 8 gigawatt-hours of annual generation — equivalent to supplying around 2,000 households. Construction is slated to begin in Q4 2026 with completion planned for mid-2027. The steel substructure will use CO2-reduced bluemint® Steel and the ZM EcoProtect® Solar coating developed for ground-mounted PV systems.
Strategic context
The on-site plant forms part of thyssenkrupp Steel’s green electricity and decarbonization measures. thyssenkrupp Steel’s energy management cites green PPAs as a core part of its strategy; the Steel Europe segment already covers more than 20% of its electricity procurement via PPAs. The project combines local generation and consumption with long-term price hedging to reduce the site’s carbon footprint.
