Initiative Overview
The K 2025 event will feature 35,000 reusable cups, created through a collaboration between Borealis, OMV, Messe Düsseldorf, Bockatech, MCC Global IML, Faerch, and ARBURG. This initiative aims to reduce waste and provide insights for future circular solutions at large events.
Production Process
The process begins with post-consumer plastic waste unsuitable for mechanical recycling. OMV's ReOil® technology converts this waste into high-quality circular feedstock. Borealis then uses this feedstock to produce modified foamable polypropylene for labels and cups. MCC Global IML manufactures laminated in-mold labels, which are applied to the cups. Bockatech's EcoCore® foam injection molding technology allows for a 50% reduction in material use, while enhancing thermal insulation and strength.
Usage and Collection
The cups will be used across all bars, restaurants, and food trucks at the event. After use, visitors can return them at 50 collection points or partner stands. The cups will be cleaned on-site and reused throughout the event.
Post-Event Plans
After K 2025, Borealis will recycle the used cups using Borcycle™ M technology. Visitors can also take cups home for personal reuse and eventual recycling. Unused cups will be donated to local organizations. The initiative will track cup usage and recycling data to refine future models for large-scale events.
