Overview
Teijin Frontier developed a polyester fiber-based textile that combines excellent heat retention with high breathability for thermal sports and outdoor apparel, and plans to position it as a key material for the fall/winter 2027 season. The product features a distinct three-dimensional texture and a light, airy hand.
Construction and performance
The fabric is made by precisely splitting a double Raschel knitted fabric: a low-crimp yarn forms the ground while bulky, high-crimp textured yarn occupies intermediate knot portions. This produces a uniform, lofty, air-containing granular raised nap whose dead-air effect delivers loft and warmth. Large knitted stitches create gaps in the base fabric; that void structure yields air permeability reported to be more than twice that of conventional products, though values vary with design. Moisture wicking occurs where the crimped yarn makes point contact with skin, then rapidly diffuses moisture to the low-crimp yarn via capillary action for quick drying, reducing chill. The stable three-dimensional structure of the crimped yarn preserves shape after repeated laundering.
Sustainability and commercial plan
The textile can be produced from recycled or conventional polyester and uses non-brushed filaments to limit fiber shedding and help reduce generation of ocean-bound microplastics during laundering. Teijin Frontier is targeting sales of 50,000 meters in fiscal 2027 and 250,000 meters in fiscal 2029 and intends to expand domestic and international sales.
