Taiyo Oil and Mitsui Chemicals Explore Chemically Recycled Product Expansion

Key highlights
  • Taiyo Oil obtained ISCC PLUS certification in June 2025 at Shikoku Operations and in July 2025 at its headquarters.
  • Mitsui Chemicals has been using bio-based hydrocarbons since December 2021 and pyrolysis oil since March 2024.
  • The study aims to process heavy fractions of pyrolysis oil at Taiyo Oil's Shikoku Operations.
  • Efforts include expanding waste plastic feedstocks and bio-based product supply.

Collaboration Overview

Taiyo Oil and Mitsui Chemicals have initiated a collaborative study to transition towards a circular economy by expanding the supply of chemically recycled products. This effort involves utilizing pyrolysis oil derived from plastic waste and other feedstocks.

Certification and Infrastructure

Taiyo Oil achieved ISCC PLUS certification in June 2025 at its Shikoku Operations and in July 2025 at its headquarters. The company is constructing facilities to handle pyrolysis oil, leveraging its refinery infrastructure for chemical recycling.

Mitsui Chemicals' Initiatives

Mitsui Chemicals has been incorporating bio-based hydrocarbons into its Osaka Works cracker since December 2021. Additionally, it began using pyrolysis oil from plastic waste in March 2024, sourced from CFP CORPORATION, to produce chemically recycled plastics and chemicals.

Study Objectives

The study aims to have Taiyo Oil's Shikoku Operations process the heavy fraction of pyrolysis oil, which is challenging for Mitsui Chemicals' crackers. The chemically recycled naphtha, propylene, and other products will be supplied to Mitsui Chemicals. The companies also plan to expand the range of waste plastic feedstocks and study the supply of bio-based products.
