Swedish Plastic Recycling to Build Largest Modern Facility in Motala

At a glance
  • Total investment: SEK 1 billion (2019–2023) with SEK 180 million from Klimatklivet.
  • Site Zero will handle 200,000 tonnes of plastic packaging annually.
  • The facility will sort 12 types of plastic and use CCS for non-recyclable waste.
  • Phase two, including washing and granulation, is planned for 2025.

Investment and Capacity

Swedish Plastic Recycling is investing SEK 1 billion from 2019 to 2023, with an additional SEK 180 million from the Klimatklivet program, to build Site Zero in Motala. The facility will handle 200,000 tonnes of plastic packaging annually, doubling the current capacity.

Advanced Recycling Technology

Site Zero will utilize cutting-edge technology to recycle nearly all types of plastic. Currently, the facility can manage four types of plastic, but future capabilities will expand to twelve types, including PP, HDPE, LDPE, PET, and more. Any residual plastic will be directed to chemical recycling or used to create new composite products, ensuring zero packaging waste goes to incineration.

Climate Neutral Operations

The facility aims to be completely climate neutral, powered by renewable energy. Non-recyclable waste will undergo energy recovery with Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) to eliminate emissions. Plans also include installing solar panels on the building's roof to generate renewable energy.

Future Developments

Phase two of the project, scheduled for 2025, will introduce washing and granulation processes, enabling the entire plastic flow in Sweden to become circular. This development will further enhance the facility's recycling capabilities and contribute to a sustainable plastic management system.
