Key highlights
  • Pragati, launched in 2016, has certified over 10,000 farmers and cultivated 140,000 tons of castor seeds.
  • The program covers 12,000 hectares, achieving a 32% higher yield than state estimates.
  • Water use reduced by 30% through efficient irrigation practices.
  • 1,150 women farmers trained in sustainable practices and financial planning.

Program Overview

Pragati, initiated in 2016 by Arkema, BASF, Jayant Agro-Organics, and Solidaridad, is the first sustainable castor bean program. It aims to promote sustainable cultivation and sourcing practices, focusing on good agricultural practices, efficient resource use, and women's participation in the supply chain.

Key Achievements

Over 10,000 farmers have been trained, audited, and certified, with more than 140,000 tons of certified castor seeds cultivated. The program covers over 12,000 hectares, achieving a 32% higher yield than government estimates for the state. Water use has been reduced by 30% through efficient irrigation practices.

Health and Safety Initiatives

Pragati has distributed over 10,000 personal protective equipment kits to farmers, ensuring safe working conditions. More than 150 medical camps have been organized, benefiting thousands of farmers and their families. Additionally, over 450 capacity-building training sessions were held, with 500 lead farmers trained to enhance peer-to-peer learning.

Women's Empowerment

Women's participation is a core pillar of Pragati. In the 2024-25 season, over 1,150 women farmers received training in good agricultural practices and financial planning. The initiative strengthens women's roles in farm management, economic resilience, and community leadership, supporting them as active decision-makers within the castor value chain.

Impact Study

An impact study by the Sustainable Castor Association and ThinkThrough Consultancy in 2023 revealed that certified farmers experienced a 30% higher income from castor compared to non-certified farms, due to reduced costs and higher yields.
