Project Overview
Sumitomo Corporation has received funding from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to enhance ammonia bunkering safety and efficiency at the Port of Singapore. The initiative is part of a broader effort to decarbonize the shipping industry and aligns with Sumitomo's energy transformation goals.
Consortium and Collaboration
A consortium led by Keppel, including Sumitomo and Advario, has been selected to advance a low- or zero-carbon ammonia project on Jurong Island. This project aims to establish a comprehensive supply chain for ammonia, covering procurement, transportation, storage, and supply for power generation and bunkering.
Ammonia as Marine Fuel
Ammonia is considered a promising alternative marine fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This aligns with the International Maritime Organization's strategy to cut emissions from international shipping by at least 20% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Future Plans
Sumitomo plans to demonstrate ammonia bunkering in Singapore by 2027, working closely with MPA and potential offtakers. The company aims to leverage insights from this demonstration to expand operations towards full-scale commercialization by 2030.
