Study Overview
A study by Zhang et al. investigated the effects of Palatinose™ on hormonal and glycaemic responses in adults with metabolic syndrome. The research was conducted using a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over design.
Methodology
Fifteen adults with a mean age of 62 participated, consuming either 50g of isomaltulose or sucrose in a 500ml citrus drink. Two protocols were tested: Protocol A involved a breakfast with the test drink followed by a standardized lunch, while Protocol B included the test drink after breakfast and before lunch.
Key Findings
Results showed that Palatinose™ led to a lower blood glucose response compared to sucrose, with a significant increase in gut hormones GLP-1 and PYY. This resulted in a slower and lower blood glucose response to subsequent meals, known as the second-meal effect.
Implications
The study highlights the importance of timing, with Protocol A showing more pronounced benefits. These findings suggest that Palatinose™ can support metabolic stability and improve insulin sensitivity in individuals with metabolic syndrome.
