Solvay Expands Zhenjiang Plant for Electronic Grade Hydrogen Peroxide

Key highlights
  • Solvay's Zhenjiang facility expansion doubles electronic grade hydrogen peroxide capacity.
  • The expansion addresses rising demand in semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Electronic grade H2O2 is crucial for cleaning and etching in chip production.
  • The inauguration event took place on September 15, 2025.

Expansion Overview

Solvay has officially opened an expansion at its Zhenjiang, China, facility, doubling its production capacity for electronic grade hydrogen peroxide. This move is in response to the growing demand from the semiconductor industry, which requires this ultra-pure chemical for integrated circuit manufacturing.

Importance of Electronic Grade H2O2

Electronic grade hydrogen peroxide is essential for critical cleaning and etching processes in semiconductor chip production. Achieving the necessary purity levels is challenging, with impurities measured in single-digit parts per trillion. Only a few companies globally have the capabilities to meet these stringent specifications.

Background and Industry Demand

This expansion builds on Solvay's initial launch of electronic grade hydrogen peroxide production at the Zhenjiang site in 2018. It directly addresses the increasing demand for these materials as electronic devices advance and the industry strives to keep up with the doubling of transistors on integrated circuits approximately every two years.

Inauguration Event

The inauguration event on September 15, 2025, was attended by leaders from the Zhenjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone, Solvay CEO Philippe Kehren, and Peroxide GBU President Carlos Silveira. This expansion is part of Solvay's broader investments in the US, Europe, and China, reinforcing its position in the electronic chemicals market.
