Sinopec and BASF verify product carbon-footprint accounting via JV cross-validation
- Sinopec and BASF reached mutual recognition of carbon-footprint accounting methodologies in 2025.
- On October 30, at the 2026 Petrochemical Industry Conference, they released results of cross-validation work.
- They commissioned certification bodies to cross-validate accounting for ethylene, butadiene and EVA from their Yangzi Petrochemical‑BASF JV.
- The exercise used the same methodology, data and results to identify differences in accounting practice and assess impacts on product footprint data.
Announcement
On October 30, during the 2026 Petrochemical Industry Conference hosted by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, Sinopec and BASF released practical results from their cooperation on product carbon-footprint accounting.
Methodology alignment
The companies had already reached mutual recognition of carbon-footprint accounting methodologies in 2025; the new disclosure moves from methodology agreement to applied, product-level validation.
Product cross-validation
They commissioned certification bodies to conduct cross-validation and systematic review of carbon-footprint accounting for three products produced by their joint venture Yangzi Petrochemical‑BASF Co., Ltd.: ethylene, butadiene and EVA (ethylene‑vinyl acetate copolymer resin).
Findings and industry relevance
The work applied the same ruler, the same data and the same result to complete cross-validation from methodology to specific products, and identified and analyzed differences in accounting practice for specific chemical products and their impact on product carbon-footprint data, providing a corporate case for mutual trust and recognition in the global chemical industry.
