Shell Invests in Kaikias Waterflood Project in Gulf of America

Key highlights
  • Shell Offshore Inc. has approved a waterflood project at the Kaikias field in the US Gulf of America.
  • Water injection will begin in 2028 to enhance oil recovery and extend Ursa platform's lifecycle.
  • The project aims to maximize high-margin production and longevity in the Mars Corridor.

Project Approval

Shell Offshore Inc., a subsidiary of Shell plc, has approved a waterflood project at its Kaikias field in the US Gulf of America. This decision aims to enhance oil recovery by injecting water to displace additional oil in the reservoir formation.

Implementation Timeline

The waterflood method involves injecting water to sweep displaced oil to adjacent production wells while re-pressurizing the reservoir. The first water injection is scheduled for 2028, with the goal of extending the production lifecycle of the Ursa platform by several years.

Strategic Objectives

This investment follows Shell's earlier decision to increase its stake in the Ursa platform. The project is part of Shell's strategy to maximize high-margin production and ensure longevity in a core basin, maintaining liquids production in the Mars Corridor.
