Introduction

Sasol International Chemicals has launched LIVINEX IO 7, a bio-circular, palm and deforestation-free surfactant derived from insect oils. This product is the first of its kind in the fabric, home care, industrial, and institutional cleaning markets.

Product Features

LIVINEX IO 7 is a nonionic surfactant that serves as a drop-in replacement for conventional C1214-based chemistry. Unlike other natural alternatives, it can be seamlessly integrated into existing product formulations without requiring full reformulation.

Production and Sustainability

The surfactant is made from oil obtained from black soldier fly larvae, rich in fatty acids used to produce detergent-grade alcohols. This process avoids land use changes or competition with food crops, as insect oil chemistry is identical to that of vegetable oil, allowing the use of mature technology and existing processes.

Market Availability and Future Plans

Currently, LIVINEX IO 7 is available exclusively in European markets, focusing on the home care, fabric, industrial, and institutional cleaning sectors. Sasol plans to expand its innovation pipeline and launch an insect oil-based product into the personal care sector within the next 12 months.
