KMG International expands energy-optimization at Petromidia and Vega refineries
- Staged measures started on August 5 reduce electrical load by approximately 5 MW during peak periods without affecting refining operations.
- Petromidia's coking plant rescheduling shifts petroleum coke cutting outside 19:00–23:00, saving about 2.2 MW.
- Rompetrol Energy's cogeneration plant has ~80 MW capacity, meets platform needs of 60–70 MW and currently delivers 8–10 MW to the national grid during 19:00–23:00; optimization can raise exports by over 50% to more than 13 MW.
- A planned LDPE unit shutdown from August 22 will cut roughly 8 MW; distribution-level measures include optimizing EV charging and recommending users avoid 19:00–22:00.
Operational measures
KMG International implemented a staged energy consumption optimization programme at the Petromidia and Vega refineries starting August 5 to reduce consumption during peak periods without affecting current activities and technological processes. Measures include optimizing operational programmes, rescheduling activities outside critical intervals and adjusting auxiliary consumption, yielding an approximate 5 MW reduction in electrical load during peaks.
Refinery examples
At Petromidia the petroleum coke cutting operation at the coking plant has been moved outside the 19:00–23:00 critical interval, reducing load by about 2.2 MW while preserving the technological process. All actions are implemented so as not to affect refining and distribution activities; maintaining refineries at optimal operating parameters and high production levels to ensure domestic fuel availability remains the stated priority.
Cogeneration and grid support
Rompetrol Energy's cogeneration plant has roughly 80 MW capacity and supplies the Petromidia platform's estimated 60–70 MW demand depending on regime. Under optimal operation it already delivers between 8 and 10 MW to the national system during 19:00–23:00, and optimisation plus facility investments can increase deliveries by over 50% to more than 13 MW during critical consumption periods, contributing to balancing the Dobrogea network.
Planned shutdown and distribution actions
From August 22 the Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) unit will enter a planned shutdown after stocks are ensured for customers, enabling an additional reduction of about 8 MW. At the distribution level KMG International is optimising EV charging station use and recommends charging outside 19:00–22:00 to ease network pressure.
