Repsol Wins Platts Award for 100% Renewable Fuels in Iberia

Key highlights
  • Repsol's Cartagena plant produces 250,000 tonnes of renewable diesel and SAF annually.
  • A second plant in Puertollano will add 200,000 tonnes of renewable diesel capacity by 2026.
  • Repsol's 95 NEXA gasoline is available at over 20 stations in Spain, aiming for 30 by year-end.
  • Combustion engines make up over 98% of the European vehicle fleet.

Renewable Fuel Production

Repsol operates the first large-scale plant in the Iberian Peninsula, located in Cartagena, with a capacity to produce 250,000 tonnes of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually. By 2026, a second plant in Puertollano will add an additional 200,000 tonnes of renewable diesel capacity for road and maritime transport.

Distribution Network

Repsol's NEXA diesel is available at nearly 1,500 service stations across Spain and Portugal, making it one of Europe's largest distribution networks for 100% renewable fuels. The company has also introduced 95 NEXA gasoline, which is currently available at over 20 service stations in Spain, with plans to expand to 30 locations by the end of the year.

Technological Milestone

Repsol achieved a significant technological milestone by producing gasoline of 100% renewable origin on an industrial scale at its Tarragona complex. This positions the company at the forefront of energy innovation.

Industry Context

Combustion engines, including petrol, diesel, and hybrid, currently represent more than 98% of the European vehicle fleet and 87% of sales in Spain this year. To meet climate objectives set by Spain and Europe, the contribution of 100% renewable fuels is essential. There is a call to review European regulations on CO2 emission standards for cars and vans, which propose a ban on combustion engines by 2035.
