- Rain Carbon will lead feedstock conversion using its LIONCOAT® carbon precursor and application process technology while GGT will apply GraphPure™ and GraphRenew™ purification.
- Pilot and testing will run at Rain Carbon’s Technology Innovation Center in Hamilton; GGT will support purification at Kingston and Montreal pilots and a larger Mississauga demo facility planned for 2026.

Project scope
Rain Carbon Canada and Green Graphite Technologies have partnered under Next Generation Manufacturing Canada’s Sustainable Manufacturing Challenge grant to advance sustainable graphite anode active materials (GAAMs) for lithium‑ion batteries. The collaboration targets a circular supply chain for graphite to support electromobility and stationary battery energy storage.
Technology and facilities
Rain Carbon will lead feedstock conversion using its LIONCOAT® carbon precursor materials and application process technology to enhance graphite performance. GGT will contribute its GraphPure™ and GraphRenew™ purification technologies to meet battery‑grade purity standards. Rain Carbon’s Technology Innovation Center in Hamilton, Ontario will host pilot‑scale production, analytical testing and battery application evaluation.
Operational footprint and schedule
GGT will run purification activities at its pilot facilities in Kingston, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec, and intends to produce larger quantities at a planned demo facility in Mississauga in 2026. The partners will use their combined pilot and demo capabilities for scale‑up and performance validation.
Expected impacts by 2030
The project aligns with NGen’s mandate to drive sustainable manufacturing and, by 2030, could deliver two new graphite product lines, reduce process waste, increase production efficiency and lower carbon footprint. The initiative is also expected to generate new intellectual property, technical expertise and direct and indirect employment across the Canadian battery materials sector.
