QEMETICA signs 299.99 mln PLN contract with Mostostal Zabrze and Sumitomo SHI FW to convert coal boiler to biomass

Project overview
QEMETICA has contracted a Mostostal Zabrze Realizacje Przemysłowe S.A. (MZRP) and Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) consortium to convert a coal-fired boiler at its Inowrocław soda plant into a boiler fuelled 100% by biomass, primarily wood chips. QEMETICA says the measure is a core element of an approximately 2 billion PLN transformation of its energy-intensive soda business.
Funding and timeline
The contract is valued at 299.99 million PLN and received a 99.9 million PLN grant from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) via the Modernization Fund. Construction will begin later this year and the boiler is scheduled for commissioning within 24 months of signing, targeted for the second half of 2028.
Scope and technical works
The conversion includes a biomass fuel management system and full infrastructure for receiving, storing and transporting biomass: unloading stations for trucks and railcars, separation facilities for metals and oversized items, feeders, storage silos and an overhead conveyor to the boiler, all fitted with fire and explosion protection systems. The modernized boiler will supply steam to the Inowrocław plant.
Consortium roles and goals
MZRP and SFW will handle design, construction and commissioning. MZRP frames the award as confirmation of its experience in complex energy projects, while SFW highlights its decarbonization technology and global project experience as the technical basis for delivery.
