Incident
An explosion and fire occurred on 21 June 2026 at the Barzan local gas supply facility at Ras Laffan Industrial City, operated by QatarEnergy. QatarEnergy describes the event as an operational accident, not sabotage or hostile in nature.
Casualties
The company confirms the tragic loss of 13 lives. Sixty‑six people are receiving medical treatment and none are in a life‑threatening condition. The lives lost were of Indian and Pakistani nationalities; those injured include Qatari, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Kenyan, Ghanaian, Tanzanian, Nigerian and Nepalese nationals.
Operations and response
Barzan production had been intentionally stopped since December 2025 for urgent maintenance and was restarted two days before the incident. QatarEnergy’s emergency response team together with Qatar’s Civil Defense extinguished the fire. Work is underway to assess damage to Barzan and neighbouring facilities, and QatarEnergy reports its LNG facilities, Ras Laffan Port, other logistics operations and export capabilities remain unaffected.
Investigation and support
A full investigation to determine the cause has commenced. QatarEnergy expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged full support to those affected.
