PureCycle & Innovia Films produce white, cavitated BOPP using PureFive Choice™ recycled PP
- Produced white, cavitated BOPP film using PureCycle’s PureFive Choice™ resin containing more than 40% post‑consumer recycled (PCR) content.
- Innovia’s trial showed comparable processing behavior and film mechanical, barrier and sealing properties versus virgin polypropylene.
- Film targets food‑contact flexible packaging: snack, confectionery, ice‑cream novelty wrappers and roll‑fed labels, delivering a paper‑like feel and printability.
- Regulatory and market drivers include California’s SB 54 and the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which sets expanded recycled content targets beginning in 2030.
Production milestone
PureCycle and Innovia Films jointly produced white, cavitated biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film using PureCycle’s PureFive Choice™ resin. The film contains more than 40% post‑consumer recycled (PCR) polypropylene and will be marketed for white, cavitated BOPP applications.
Performance and testing
Innovia conducted comprehensive process evaluations across the full cavitated BOPP production sequence. PureFive Choice™ yielded processing results comparable to virgin PP. Films with varying percentages of PureFive Choice™ delivered comparable mechanical, barrier and sealing properties necessary for product integrity and packaging‑line performance.
Market and regulatory context
White, cavitated BOPP is widely used in confectionery, snacks, ice‑cream novelty wrappers and roll‑fed labels because of its opacity, light weight, printability and paper‑like feel. Demand for PCR flexible packaging is being driven by voluntary corporate commitments such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Commitment and by regulation, including California’s SB 54 and the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which expands mandatory recycled content targets beginning in 2030.
Resin and technology
PureFive Choice™ is a specially formulated one‑pellet grade engineered for film applications and produced via PureCycle’s patented dissolution recycling process, which removes color, odor and contaminants from #5 polypropylene waste to yield food‑contact‑compliant recycled resin suitable for high‑performance flexible packaging.
