- Prysmian will collect plastic scrap from production and decommissioned cables.
- Versalis will use Hoop\u00ae technology to convert scrap into pyrolysis oil.
- The first pilot project will start in Italy in the second half of 2026.
- About 60% of XLPE scrap is expected to be repurposed into reusable material.
Partnership Overview
Prysmian and Versalis have formed a strategic partnership to recycle plastic cable scrap using an innovative chemical process. This collaboration aims to develop a dedicated supply chain for recycling.
Recycling Process
Prysmian will collect plastic scrap from its production and decommissioned cables from major customers. Versalis will employ its Hoop® technology at the Mantua plant in Italy to convert the scrap into pyrolysis oil, which will then be transformed into new material for plastic polymers.
Project Implementation
The first pilot project is scheduled to commence in Italy in the second half of 2026. This initiative marks a significant step in the cable industry, allowing for the chemical recycling of cross-linked cables with all polymeric layers at scale.
Environmental Impact
Approximately 60% of the XLPE scrap is expected to be repurposed into reusable material for new cable production, contributing to a circular economy and reducing environmental impact.
