Covestro Bayblend T85X R35 CQ (35% PCR PC/ABS) adopted for Lexus ES interiors
- Bayblend T85X R35 CQ contains 35% post-consumer recycled content and is specified for selected Lexus ES interior components.
- Covestro reports a 25% reduction in Global Warming Potential (CO₂e) versus conventional fossil-based equivalents, per internal calculations.
- Development and validation were conducted jointly by Toyota Motor Corporation, Toyota Motor Kyushu, Kojima Industries Corporation and Covestro.
- Material meets durability, surface quality, dimensional stability and processability requirements and supports paintable and pre-coloured visible parts; it aids ELV regulation compliance and EU targets toward 2032.
Adoption
Covestro's Bayblend T85X R35 CQ, a polycarbonate/ABS blend with 35% post-consumer recycled content and part of the Circular Intelligence (CQ) portfolio, has been selected for multiple interior components in the Lexus ES. The implementation is described as one of the first integrations of 35% mechanically recycled content in visible premium automotive interior parts.
Performance and validation
The material was validated through collaborative testing with Toyota Motor Corporation, Toyota Motor Kyushu and Kojima Industries to ensure it met specifications for durability, surface quality, dimensional stability and processability. It is suitable for both pre-coloured and paintable applications, enabling use in visible interiors and some exterior parts while integrating into existing manufacturing processes.
Circular economy and regulatory alignment
Covestro reports the material delivers a 25% reduction in Global Warming Potential (CO₂ equivalents) compared with conventional fossil-based alternatives (internal calculations). The adoption is positioned to support vehicle manufacturers in meeting expected quotas under the EU End-of-Life-Vehicle (ELV) Regulation and broader circularity goals.
Outlook
Covestro says its global production footprint and reliable post-consumer feedstocks provide supply stability as demand grows. The company is expanding its post-consumer recycled product lines, including an "RV line" of R-series materials using end-of-life vehicle components such as headlamps with third-party certification, to help meet EU ELV recycling targets toward 2032.
