PHENOGY and HD Advanced Technologies partner to industrialise sodium‑ion battery cells and systems
- HD Advanced Technologies will handle end‑to‑end industrial contract manufacturing of PHENOGY’s stationary energy storage systems, including procurement, production, rollout, installation, service and maintenance.
- The partners are preparing a joint venture to develop and industrially produce sodium‑ion battery cells using PHENOGY’s cell chemistry and HEIDELBERG’s specialised printing process.
- Initial production for Europe will be based in Germany, with planned future expansion to the U.S. to serve North America.
- Sodium‑ion technology avoids lithium and cobalt, relies on widely available raw materials, and aims to reduce dependence on critical raw materials and non‑European supply chains.
Overview
PHENOGY AG and HD Advanced Technologies GmbH have signed two linked agreements to create a European technology and industrial platform for sodium‑ion battery technology: a framework contract for industrial contract manufacturing of PHENOGY’s storage systems and steps to establish a joint venture to develop and produce sodium‑ion cells at scale.
Manufacturing agreement
Under a long‑term framework supply agreement, HD Advanced Technologies will implement industrial production of cabinets, containers and system products for PHENOGY across the full value chain — electronics manufacturing, assembly, rollout, installation, service and maintenance — initially in Germany for the European market and later in the U.S. for North America.
Joint venture and technology
The contemplated joint venture will combine PHENOGY’s sodium‑ion cell chemistry and design with HEIDELBERG’s specialised printing process to develop and industrially manufacture sodium‑ion cells and modules. The partners aim to cover research, development and production, enabling tailored cell formats for high‑requirement applications.
Strategic rationale
The collaboration targets applications with stringent demands — critical infrastructure, defence and mobility — and seeks to speed market availability of sodium‑ion systems while structurally reducing dependence on lithium, cobalt and non‑European supply chains to strengthen regional supply security.
