PHENOGY and HDAT to scale sodium‑ion battery systems into series production

Key highlights
  • PHENOGY commissioned Europe’s first large‑scale sodium‑ion energy storage system in Bremen last year.
  • PHENOGY signed a long‑term framework agreement with HD Advanced Technologies (HDAT) for manufacturing, installation and maintenance.
  • Manufacturing will initially support the European market from Germany, with potential expansion to the United States.
  • Sodium‑ion chemistry avoids lithium and cobalt and uses widely available raw materials to lower supply‑chain concentration risk.

Commercialisation and partnership

PHENOGY, after commissioning Europe’s first large‑scale sodium‑ion energy storage system in Bremen last year and receiving industry recognition including The smarter E AWARD, has partnered with HD Advanced Technologies (HDAT) under a long‑term framework agreement to manufacture its battery energy storage systems and provide installation and maintenance services.

Fabless manufacturing model

PHENOGY focuses on cell chemistry, system design and customer solutions while outsourcing industrial‑scale cabinet and container manufacturing to HDAT. The approach uses a fabless model to access specialised production capabilities and accelerate capacity ramp‑up.

Supply‑chain strategy and chemistry

The collaboration advances PHENOGY’s strategy to increase control over supply chains. Sodium‑ion technology does not require lithium or cobalt and is based on widely available raw materials, supporting resilient, regional supply chains and reduced dependence on geographically concentrated resources.

Regional rollout

HDAT will initially manufacture and support the European market from Germany, with potential expansion into the United States through PHENOGY Inc. and comparable manufacturing partnerships as PHENOGY transitions from a technology startup toward global series production.
