Rompetrol Rafinare Launches New Polymer Grade

Key highlights
  • Rompetrol Rafinare's new polymer, Polypropylene Random Copolymer, is produced using propylene and imported ethylene.
  • The production unit underwent major technical adaptations to optimize for the new copolymer.
  • Initial production tests yielded 187 tons, with an annual target of 11,000 tons.
  • In 2025, the division processed 114,000 tons of raw materials, boosting total polymer production to 85,000 tons.

New Polymer Production

Rompetrol Rafinare has initiated the production of a new polymer grade, Polypropylene Random Copolymer, to diversify its product portfolio and meet the rising demand in the automotive and food industries. This development marks a significant advancement for Romania's sole petrochemical division.

Technical Adaptations

The production of this copolymer required substantial technical modifications in the Polypropylene unit, including equipment configuration and system testing. These changes ensured optimized production parameters while maintaining high-quality standards.

Raw Materials and Production

The copolymer is produced using propylene and imported ethylene, with precise calibration essential for compliance. Initial production tests in February yielded approximately 187 tons, with an annual production target of 11,000 tons.

Applications and Compliance

The new polymer grade offers enhanced physical and mechanical properties, particularly at low temperatures, making it suitable for demanding applications in the automotive and food sectors. It is used in manufacturing products requiring high resistance and flexibility, such as refrigerated packaging and injection-molded items. All products comply with EU food safety regulations.

Production and Market Impact

In 2025, the petrochemical division processed 114,000 tons of raw materials, an increase from 2024, due to the restart of the low-density polyethylene unit. Total polymer production reached 85,000 tons, primarily supplied to the domestic market, supporting national manufacturing industries.
