Rompetrol Rafinare Petromidia marks 50-year milestone
- Construction began 9 July 1976 on a 480‑hectare industrial platform, including more than 35 hectares reclaimed from the sea.
- Petromidia started operations in 1979 with the commissioning of the Atmospheric Distillation Unit.
- The site now comprises 29 specialized units, produces over 30 primary and secondary products and has an annual processing capacity above 5 million tons with a Nelson Complexity Index of 9.32.
- In 2025 the refinery recorded its highest-ever crude throughput and all-time high production and white‑product yields for gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, LPG and propylene.
Origins and construction
Work began 9 July 1976 with the pouring of the first foundation pillar on a site that was largely sand, reeds and sea. Approximately 480 hectares were prepared for the complex, including more than 35 hectares reclaimed from the Black Sea shore. Ground stabilization and site-preparation works involved thousands of specialists from Romania and abroad.
Commissioning and expansion
The Atmospheric Distillation Unit was commissioned in 1979, marking the start of refinery operations. Over subsequent decades additional processing units were added, and the platform evolved into an integrated refining and petrochemical complex producing more than 30 primary and secondary products, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, LPG, polyethylene, polypropylene and petroleum coke.
Capacity, modernization and recent performance
Today Petromidia operates 29 specialized units and hosts more than 20 companies (group members and subcontractors), supporting strategically important logistics infrastructure. The refinery reports an annual processing capacity of over 5 million tons and a Nelson Complexity Index of 9.32. Following acquisition by KazMunayGas, successive modernization programmes and technology investments preceded 2025 operational records: the highest-ever crude throughput and peak yields and production levels for white products and key fuels.
