Petrobras completes drilling; third oil discovery in ultra-deepwater FZA-M-59 off Amapá
- Third oil-bearing interval identified in the Morpho well, the third discovery in block FZA-M-59.
- Discovery confirmed in ultra-deepwater off Amapá at a water depth of 2,886 meters.
- Drilling and geological-data acquisition have been completed; well abandonment will follow.
- The rig will move to the Potiguar Basin (Rio Grande do Norte) to begin drilling at the Mãe de Ouro location.
Discovery
Petrobras identified another oil-bearing interval in the Morpho well, marking the third discovery in block FZA-M-59 on the Equatorial Margin. The find was confirmed after continued evaluation of other intervals, following discoveries announced in August and in early October 2026.
Operations status
Drilling and acquisition of geological data for the well have been completed. Only the finalization of operations in the well (abandonment) remains to be carried out.
Next steps and strategic context
After abandonment, the rig will head to the Potiguar Basin, off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, to begin drilling at the Mãe de Ouro location. Petrobras states activities in block FZA-M-59 align with its long-term strategy to replenish oil and gas reserves by exploring new frontiers and contribute to meeting the country's energy demand.
