  • It uses wood-based biomass fuels from certified forests.
  • Sumitomo Corporation manages fuel procurement and traceability.

Project Overview

The Sendai Port Biomass Power Plant, funded by Sumitomo Corporation, Tokyo Gas, Hokuriku Electric Power, and Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku, commenced operations in November 2025. It is one of Japan's largest dedicated biomass power facilities, with a capacity of 112 MW and an annual generation of approximately 800,000 MWh, equivalent to the electricity consumption of around 260,000 households.

Fuel and Sustainability

The plant utilizes wood-based biomass fuels, including pellets and chips, sourced from thinning timber, mill residues, and lower-grade wood from forest management. All fuels are obtained from forests certified by recognized programs, ensuring sustainable forestry practices. Sumitomo Corporation oversees the procurement process, maintaining full traceability and proper utilization of forest resources.

Environmental Impact

The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to carbon neutrality in the Tohoku region. By providing a stable supply of renewable energy, the plant supports broader efforts to lower environmental impact and promote sustainable business operations.
