- Northvolt will start gigafactory operations in late 2024.
- The site will employ up to 1,000 people and produce over 100 GWh of cathode material annually.
- The factory will use 100% clean energy from the region.
- The project supports more than $50 billion in orders from key customers.
Project Overview
Northvolt and Stora Enso have signed a letter of intent to purchase the Kvarnsveden Mill and its surrounding industrial area in Borlänge, Sweden. Northvolt plans to transform the site into a manufacturing plant for active material and battery cells, reusing much of the existing infrastructure.
Timeline and Employment
The gigafactory is expected to commence operations in late 2024 and will employ up to 1,000 people. The facility will utilize 100% clean energy from the region, contributing to sustainable production practices.
Production Capacity
Once fully operational, the site will have an annual production capacity of over 100 GWh of cathode material, supporting cell assembly at multiple Northvolt facilities. The site will also include cell production capabilities.
Historical Context
Founded in 1900, the Kvarnsveden Mill produced pulp and paper for over 120 years until its closure in 2021, which resulted in the layoff of over 400 employees. Key managers from the Kvarnsveden site will remain during the transition period to facilitate a smooth transformation.
Strategic Importance
This project is part of Northvolt's mission to deliver sustainable lithium-ion batteries and support the decarbonization of society. The factory will help fulfill more than $50 billion in orders from key customers and is part of a broader European production network.
