Approval for Salt Extraction Extension
Nobian has received approval from the Dutch Ministry of Climate and Green Growth to continue salt extraction in Zuidwending, Groningen until December 31, 2035. This decision allows the eight caverns currently in use to enter the final phase of their operational lifespan.
Ensuring Supply for the Chemical Industry
The extension is crucial for maintaining a reliable supply of high-purity salt, which is essential for the chemical industry, including facilities in Delfzijl and Rotterdam. This supply supports the production of key materials such as chlorine and caustic soda, which are vital for manufacturing medicines, batteries, LED lighting, and wind turbines.
Research on Cavern Closure
The Cavern Closure Consortium (CCC) has conducted extensive international research on the effects of permanently closing large caverns in Groningen. The findings have been integrated into the extraction plan, and further research is mandated as part of the permit to prepare a definitive closure plan for the caverns.
