Neste, Goldwin, Idemitsu and Toray establish renewable nylon supply chain for THE NORTH FACE
- Neste, Goldwin, Idemitsu and Toray established a supply chain to produce nylon fiber from renewable raw materials, with Mitsubishi Corporation coordinating the parties.
- Neste supplies Neste RE™, a renewable naphtha made from ISCC‑certified, traceable bio‑based raw materials such as used cooking oil and other renewable inputs.
- The renewable nylon fiber is scheduled to be used in part of THE NORTH FACE products from August 2026.
- Use of neat Neste RE is claimed to reduce over 85% of raw‑material GHG emissions compared with virgin fossil feedstocks, per a 30 June 2021 LCA; the project uses a mass‑balance, drop‑in approach.
Partnership and coordination
Goldwin, Neste, Idemitsu and Toray have established a supply chain to produce nylon fiber from renewable raw materials for use in THE NORTH FACE products. Mitsubishi Corporation coordinated the participating companies in creating the supply chain.
Feedstock and material
Neste will supply Neste RE™, a renewable naphtha produced from ISCC‑certified and traceable bio‑based raw materials such as used cooking oil and other renewable inputs. The companies state that bio‑based plastics derived from Neste RE are of identical quality to those made from virgin fossil feedstocks.
Environmental claim and method
According to a life‑cycle assessment dated 30 June 2021, the use of neat Neste RE can reduce over 85% of the greenhouse gas emissions of the raw material compared to virgin fossil feedstocks. The project applies a mass‑balance approach and uses existing polymer and chemicals manufacturing infrastructure; Neste RE is described as a drop‑in replacement for fossil naphtha.
Timing and context
The nylon fiber produced through this project is scheduled to be used by Goldwin in part of THE NORTH FACE products starting August 2026. This collaboration follows a prior supply‑chain partnership involving THE NORTH FACE in July 2024.
